Job Purpose
​To be developed and nurtured to become a high performing Field Operator: to operate, control and monitor the operation of boiler or turbine generator auxiliaries to ensure safe and efficient generation of power in accordance with standard procedures and safety standards.

Principal Accountabilities/Responsibilities
  1. ​Operates the steam boilers or turbine generator auxiliaries in accordance with operating procedures, safety standards and code of practice.
  2.  Monitors operational parameters on the status of the plant to ensure there are no deviations from set limit and take remedial action where appropriate.
  3.  Carries out routine plant inspection checks and monitors plant operating status to ensure effective condition of plant equipment and machinery.
  4.  Identifies faults and defects and takes appropriate action and reports to the supervisor.
  5.  Performs operational standing instructions, such as emergency protection devices tests and cut-in tests (for fire pumps and emergency generators) to ensure reliability/availability of emergency facilities to minimise the risk of failure.
  6.  Writes up logs to record plant and equipment performance such as temperature and pressure readings and turbine vibrations etc to ensure there is a record of operational status and occurrences.
  7. Carries out activities for start-up and shutdown of boilers, turbines, or auxiliary plant as instructed by the supervisor.
  8.  Carries out mechanical isolation and de-isolation of plant and auxiliary equipment as directed to make available for maintenance and service.

Qualifications
​Recognised National Craft Certificate in Power Plant Operation or equivalent, experience in power plant will be an advantage but not a requisite
