Duties: The successful candidate shall be expected to (i) lead all fundraising activities for the Institute; (ii) expand the Institute’s current donors/collaborator base; (iii) provide information to programme/project coordinators on Institutional and individual donor prospects; (iv) assist build research teams, and collect supporting materials for research and/or development of  project proposals;  (v) assist in the development of MoU’s, MoA’s and contracts; (vi) strengthening engagement and commitment with the Institute’s stakeholders; (vii)coordinate official visits to the Institute; (viii) Market the Institute and engage in public relations activities; (ix) Produce the Institute’s biannual newsletter; (x) Produce Institute’s reports; (xi) develop and manage the implementation of ORI’s communication strategy and (xii)  carry out any other duties as may be directed by the supervisor.

Requirements: A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in any field. Preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree with expertise or experience in Project management, proposal development, fundraising and public relations. In addition candidates should have excellent interpersonal, management, negotiation, communication and organisational skills. They should be results oriented, proactive, assertive, analytical, innovative and decisive. Competence in information technology, including Microsoft office package and specifically Microsoft publisher and project is essential.

Experience: A minimum of five (5) years documented managerial experience in successful fund raising for research and development programmes/projects in environmental oriented organisations. Must have proven experience in: (i) establishing and maintaining strategic links, partnerships and collaboration of effective and beneficial relations with relevant research Institutes and other stakeholders and (ii) the candidate must be able to develop and make presentations to potential funders and a variety of stakeholders.

Experience: At least two years as a Building Trades Artisan with a wide range of knowledge of the building related trades and with competences of organizational and supervisory skills and Interpersonal communication skills.

Applications are invited for the following academic position at the Okavango Research Institute (ORI). The Institute is based in Maun in the North Western part of Botswana and specializes in natural resources management, sustainable natural resource use and conservation in the world famous Okavango Delta and the Kgalagadi (Kalahari) region. Dutiesthe successful candidate will attend to public health aspects in the Okavango/Ngamiland District. The candidate will investigate and research on patterns and causes of disease and injury in humans. The candidate will seek ways of reducing the risk and occurrence of negative health outcomes through research, community education, and health policy. The candidate will further research on issues such as: Communicable and non- communicable diseases, Infectious diseases, Maternal and child health, chronic diseases, Environmental health, Injuries, Occupational health, Substance abuse and Oral health. Schistosomiasis, malaria, trypanosomiasis, filariasis, cholera, diarrhea diseases, chemical poisoning, malnutrition and injuries were identified as potential health hazards. These are diseases transmitted by intermediate hosts based in water (water-based diseases), diseases transmitted by insect vectors that breed in or near water (water related diseases), diseases contracted by drinking contaminated water (water-borne diseases) and diseases caused by lack of hygiene (water washed diseases). The Okavango Delta also has diseases such as prevalent HIV and AIDS issues which affect the health of people in the region. The candidate should be able to: i) identify and initiate prioritization of public health problems/challenges in the Okavango Delta, ii) provide analysis of impacts and consequences of the identified problems/challenges, iii) final prioritization of the public health problems and iv) provide a causal chain analysis and governance analysis.

The candidate is also expected to undertake research in the economic evaluation of tourism destinations and products, hotel management structures, quality control, and consider overall sustainability and environment issues.  The research should provide for a better understanding of the rapidly growing tourism market in Botswana and outcomes need to be made available to academic researchers, policy makers, private investors and the broader community.  These stakeholders recognize qualified information and data as an important competitive advantage in the market place. Duties: The successful candidate will conduct research focusing on the understanding of various aspects of hydrological processes in the Okavango Delta, particularly flooding dynamics, evapo-transpiration and vegetation/ water relations. This involves the formulation of broad research projects, (successful) preparation and submission of research proposals, organizing and conducting field measurement campaigns, design and implementation of observation networks, analysis and interpretation of data, and presentation of results in the form of scientific journal articles and oral presentations to various audiences. The candidate will also be expected to teach, supervise students and mentoring of junior staff.

Requirements:
Associate Professor: Applicants should have: (i) a Master’s Degree with specialization in Hydrology, preferably focusing on wetland hydrology; (ii) have at least three (3) years of research/teaching experience at a University or comparable institution; (iii) have a good and sustained record of research and publications of at least twenty one (21) publications, fourteen (14) of which should be refereed journal articles or book chapters and should be a lead and/or sole author in at least eleven (11) of these; (iv) the overall  profile of research should provide evidence of research mentorship of junior scholars; (v) evidence of service to University, the Profession and the Community; (vi) evidence of effective academic leadership. Ability to lead collaborative research including multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural teamwork, experience in wetland research, preferably focusing on tropical or sub-tropical wetlands, and ideally on southern African wetlands, and a PhD focusing on wetland hydrology will be added advantages.

Duties: The successful candidate will conduct research on the Okavango Delta ecosystem, analysing environmental samples such as water, soil and plants. The focus will be on the application of Analytical Chemistry to ecosystem dynamics, climate change and water resources management. The candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the operations of the Environmental Laboratory and assist to develop, adapt and adopt methods and techniques (including method validation and development of standard operating procedures) in order for the environmental laboratory to perform its activities.

Requirements: Research Scholar: Applicants should hold: (i) a Master’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry; (ii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or a related field with at least a 2(i) pass/GPA of at least 3.6 or equivalent; (iii) show evidence of engagement in research and service. Duties: The successful candidate will conduct research focusing on disease ecology in northern Botswana and the Kgalagadi region. Northern Botswana has mixed land uses such as wildlife conservation and livestock production, which creates challenges for control of disease transmission between wildlife and livestock and vice versa. In addition, diseases in northern Botswana have socio-economic and ecological impacts on ecosystem services and in some cases are drivers of biodiversity loss. Thus, the successful candidate will be expected to conduct research that advances our understanding of conditions and vectors of disease transmission between various wildlife species, livestock and people and how this can be managed. Key research would be focussed on finding solutions for harmony of wildlife conservation and livestock production beyond the veterinary fence concept and identifying wildlife diseases that are threats to the wildlife and the tourism industry.
Research will involve the formulation of broad research projects, (successful) preparation and submission of research proposals, organizing and conducting field measurement campaigns, analysis and interpretation of data, and presentation of results in the form of scientific journal articles and oral presentations to various audiences. The candidate will also be expected to teach, supervise students and mentor junior staff, as well as providing technical expertise to colleagues planning to collar, capture or collect tissue samples from research animals.

Requirements: Research ScholarApplicants should hold: (i) a Master’s Degree with specialization in disease ecology (ii) a Bachelor’s Degree in disease ecology with at least a 2(i) pass/GPA of at least 3.6 or equivalent; (iii) evidence of engagement in research and service. A PhD focusing on wetland disease ecology will be added advantage.

Duties:  the successful candidate will conduct research on the human use of natural resources in the Okavango Delta area.  The work will include monitoring of key socio-economic and related environment parameters and describing and mapping and digitizing the information.  It will cover practices and attitudes of the land users regarding the sustainability and conservation of the natural resources and the relationship between human activities and ecosystem interventions (disturbance pattern). The research activities will involve the analysis of effective stakeholder participation in the ongoing planning and resource management process in the Okavango Delta and contribute to the drawing up of management proposals.

Requirements: Senior Research Scholar: Applicants should hold: i) A Master’s degree in Regional Development Planning, Urban and Regional Planning, Land use Planning, Natural Resource Management, Human Geography, Planning or in a related planning field; (ii) A Bachelor’s degree in Regional Development Planning, Urban and Regional Planning, Land use Planning, Natural Resource Management, Human Geography, Planning or in a related planning field with at least a 2(i) pass/GPA of at least 3.6 on a 5.0 scale or equivalent; (iii) show evidence of engagement in service; (iv) at least one (1) year research/teaching experience at a University or a comparable institute or one (1) year of relevant professional experience; (v) a cumulative and sustained record of research and have at least ten (10) publications, seven  (7) of which should be refereed journal articles or book chapters and should be a lead and/or sole author in at least three (3) of these. Skills in Geographical Information Systems and participatory planning methods, relevant working experience preferably in the rural development context and relevant PhD, teaching experience at a University or comparable institution, demonstration of effective academic leadership will be added advantages.
