RESEARCH SCHOLAR/RESEARCH SCHOLAR IN TOURISM ECONOMICS, OKAVANGO
RESEARCH INSTITUTE (Re-advertisement)
Applications are invited for the
following academic position at the Okavango Research Institute (ORI). The
Institute is based in Maun in the North Western part of Botswana and
specializes in natural resources management, sustainable natural resource use and
conservation in the world famous Okavango Delta and the Kgalagadi (Kalahari)
region. The Institute has a good library (a branch of the University library in
Gaborone) and excellent research laboratories. The Institute attracts
significant international funding and is becoming generally acknowledged as a
global research leader in natural resources management. Additional information

Duties: The successful
candidate will be expected to conduct research that provides up to date
information on the micro and macro-economic contribution of tourism to
Botswana’s economy. The candidate is also expected to undertake research in the
economic evaluation of tourism destinations and products, hotel management
structures, quality control, and consider overall sustainability and
environment issues. The research should provide for a better
understanding of the rapidly growing tourism market in Botswana and outcomes
need to be made available to academic researchers, policy makers, private
investors and the broader community. These stakeholders recognize
qualified information and data as an important competitive advantage in the
market place. Research areas therefore need to include, but are not limited to
the following: i) micro and macro contributions of tourism development to the
economy, ii) Tourism and Environment: an evaluation; iii) Tourism demand and
forecasting (e.g. micro-foundations of tourist choice, tourism demand
forecasting etc, iv) Tourism supply (e.g. pricing issues within tourism
enterprises and markets, pricing principles for natural and cultural
attractions) vi)Tourism transport (e.g. airline alliances and tourism, aviation
and tourism) vii) Tourism taxation and infrastructure (e.g. taxation of travel
and tourism, public sector investment in tourism infrastructure).The successful
candidate will also be expected to contribute effectively to cross cutting
programmes as defined in the ORI Strategic Plan.
Requirements: Senior
Research Scholar: Applicants should hold: (i) a Master’s degree
in Tourism Economics, Business or Tourism management; (ii)
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science or Business with a strong background in
Economics and in one or a combination of the following fields of study:
Hospitality and Tourism Economics, Tourism Management, Accounting and Finance
for Business, Hospitality and Tourism Services Marketing, Sustainable Tourism
Management and/or other related studies with an aggregate of at least 65%
pass/GPA of at least 3.6 on a scale of 5.0; (iii) at least one (1) year research/teaching experience
at a university or a comparable institute or one (1) year
professional experience; (iv) a cumulative and sustained record of
research and have at least ten (10) publications, Seven (7) of
which should be refereed journal articles or book chapter and should be a lead
and/or sole author in at least three (3) of these; (v) evidence of engagement in
service. Evidence
of effective academic leadership ability to lead collaborative
research including multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural teamwork and a
relevant PhD will be added advantage.
Research Scholar: Applicants
should hold: (i) a Master’s degree in Tourism Economics, Business or
Tourism management; (ii) Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science or Business with a
strong background in Economics and in one or a combination of the following
fields of study: Hospitality and Tourism Economics, Tourism Management,
Accounting and Finance for Business, Hospitality and Tourism Services
Marketing, Sustainable Tourism Management and/or other related studies with at
least a 2(i) pass/GPA of at least 3.6 on a scale of 5.0 or
equivalent; (iii) show evidence of engagement in research and
service. A relevant PhD, research/teachingexperience at a University
or comparable institution, demonstration of effective academic
leadership will be added advantages.

Note: For Senior
Research Scholar, the curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of
publications: clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published, names
of publishers, names of co-authors if any, and number of pages. The
publications should be categorized into: books, monographs, chapters in books,
refereed and non-refereed journals, consultancies etc. The CV should also have
