Associate, HIV Prevention

Associate, HIV Prevention
Country: South Africa
City: Pretoria
Type: Full Time
Business Unit: HIV, TB & Health Financing

Overview:
Founded in 2002 by President William J. Clinton, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to strengthening integrated health systems around the world and expanding access to care and treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria and other illnesses. Based on the premise that business oriented strategy can facilitate solutions to global health challenges, CHAI acts as a catalyst to mobilize new resources and optimize the impact of these resources to save lives, via improved organization of commodity markets and more effective local management. By working in association with governments and other NGO partners, CHAI is focused on large scale impact and, to date, CHAI has secured lower pricing agreements for treatment options in more than 70 countries. In addition, CHAI's teams are working side-by-side with over 30 governments to tackle many of the largest barriers to effective treatment and care.

CHAI is currently expanding the focus of its HIV/AIDS work to drive scale up of proven biomedical prevention technologies – particularly voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC). VMMC is one of the most important interventions in the HIV prevention strategy, reducing transmission by 60%, a rate similar to some vaccines, leading to a much lower cost per infection averted than other HIV prevention interventions. Countries and donors set an ambitious target of circumcising 80% of HIV-negative, currently uncircumcised adult men in the 14 highest burden countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. Modeling suggests that, if these targets are achieved, 3.4 million HIV infections would be averted through 2025 and result in a net savings of US$16.5 billion in treatment costs. CHAI is currently supporting the governments of South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to meet their national VMMC targets. Through this support, CHAI aims to drive improvements to program performance and efficiency in order to increase the impact of VMMC and helping to avert new HIV infections and reduce overall treatment costs across the region.

As the Associate for HIV Prevention, the successful candidate will work closely with the VMMC Program Manager and CHAI country teams to execute CHAI’s VMMC strategy and activities in focus countries. Specific responsibilities and qualifications are listed below:
Responsibilities:
  • Structure and drive quantitative and qualitative analyses that address key programmatic issues facing national VMMC programs; this could include issues related to monitoring and evaluation, procurement and supply chain, personnel utilization and demand generation among priority populations.
  • Inform strategic decision-making among CHAI teams and relevant external partners, including Ministries of Health through:
    • Analyzing and drawing conclusions from large volumes of data from several sources;
    • Creating quantitative models, visuals and analyses to estimate the cost and impact of VMMC service delivery;
    • Presenting analytical findings to internal and external audiences.
  • Provide strategic technical assistance to support CHAI’s in-country VMMC programs to ensure that the performance of national VMMC scale up is monitored for efficiency and effectiveness – and that targets are met.
  • Support program management, including donor reporting, planning, budgeting and knowledge management to ensure best practices are shared across focus countries.
  • Proactively monitor developments related to VMMC and HIV prevention across focus countries and at the global level – and ensure updates are shared with country teams to inform program planning and decision-making
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by team supervisor
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a well-recognized, high-caliber institution in a relevant field
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a private or public sector enterprise
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical and quantitative skills
  • Ability to think strategically, handle ambiguity and work in a very fast-paced, limited-structure, multicultural environment
  • Detail-oriented with strong organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to travel extensively to focus countries and other locations as relevant to work (for in-country support, conferences, etc.)
  • Strong diplomatic and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word
