The Botswana Institute for Technology Research and
Innovation (BITRI) is a technology research institute whose mandate is to undertake
research, identify and or develop appropriate technologies in line with
national priorities and needs of Botswana.
RESEARCHER, CLIMATE CHANGE (Risk Analysis) (1 Post)
Main Purpose of the Job:
The Researcher in Climate Change Risk and Vulnerability
Analysis responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Based
on a review of existing regional models, and stakeholder
consultations, identify a range of climate change scenarios with
particular reference to the agriculture, water and energy sectors for the
design of adaptation measures.
- Undertake
vulnerability and climate risks assessments that are pertinent to inform
projects design.
- Determine
suitable and concrete adaptation measures.
- Identify
required additional investments for climate resilient sectors management.
- Design
the projects’ policy, institutional and capacity development strategy and
action plan.
- Estimate
the cost of climate change impacts on various sectors in absence of
adaptation.
- Prepare
cost/benefits analysis for adaptation measures.
- Assist
in clarifying additionality of proposed outcomes, outputs and activities.
- Assist
in identifying the risks for the expected outcomes, outputs and activities
including the climate changes risks.
- Contribute
in the definition of the monitoring and evaluation strategy for the
projects
- Write
policy briefs.
- Develop
research concept notes and proposals for seeking external research
funding.

Education:
- A
PhD in Physical Geography, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Sciences,
Quantitative Risk Management, or Economics is required.
- Candidates
with proof for nearer PhD complexion will be considered for hire after
completion.
Experience and working knowledge:
- Experience
in scenarios planning and/or development
- Experience
in vulnerability and climate risk assessment
- Experience
in adaptation and/or disaster risk reduction
- climate
risk assessment and adaptation measure application
- Exposure
to climate change risk analysis, adaptation response options
(understanding potential environmental and social associated issues) and
preferably with experience in using economics and social statistics.
- Knowledgeable
in risk analysis and risk modelling work based on the climate index
outputs
REMUNERATION
BITRI offers attractive working conditions and remuneration
commensurate with qualifications and experience. The above post is for five (5)
years fixed term contract.
