Mission and objectives
Since its inception in 1972, the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) has been the global authority that sets the environmental
agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of
sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an
authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s mission is to provide
leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring,
informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life
without compromising that of future generations. Headquartered in Nairobi,
Kenya, UNEP works through its divisions as well as regional, liaison and
out-posted offices and a growing network of collaborating centres of
excellence.
Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the
leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental
agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of
sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an
authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Policy and Programme
Division consolidates the policy, programme, monitoring, gender, and social
safeguards functions of UNEP as well as its engagement with the United Nations
system and key global processes such as the implementation of the 2030 Agenda
for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other
landmark global policy decisions in the context of the UN Development System
(UNDS) reform.
Task description
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of
the Programme Management Officer or his/her designated mandated
representative(s), the UNV Communications & Knowledge Management Associate
will be carrying out the following tasks: • Draft, edit, proofread, design, and
layout communications content including articles, case studies, knowledge
products, presentations, guidance notes, and SOPs for the UNEP UNCT Engagement
Network and UNEP use at country level. • Draft, coordinate, and disseminate the
UNEP UNCT Knowledge Network monthly newsletter/updates, showcasing the Advisory
Group and Network’s content and new Knowledge Products. • Support the
organization, coordination, and back-end facilitation of the UN Reform
Dialogues/Webinars and other online virtual exchanges among practitioners, as
well as document them and maintain the documentation. • Support the
maintenance, update, and curation of the Knowledge Network SharePoint Space,
online resource library, and related mailing lists and communications channels
in close coordination with the PCU Knowledge Management Taskforce. • Liaise and
coordinate with other communications and knowledge management focal points
within PPD and UNEP to ensure that activities and webinars are implemented in a
strategic and complementary manner and encourage exchange of information and
good practices. • Support the drafting, development, implementation, and review
of PCU’s Knowledge Management and Communications Plans. • Develop a template
for the UNEP Knowledge Products for UNCTs and support colleagues in ensuring
they have a general look & feel and are compliant with UNEPs corporate
guidelines. • Design, document, and facilitate the implementation of a
knowledge repository of case studies and key messages to support the work and
mandate of PCU & PPD • Review UNEP and UN materials as required and extract
the relevant information to feed into the Case Studies and Key Messages
repositories as well as organize and upload in the document library when
relevant for UNCT engagement. • Train and support UNEP colleagues on the usage
of the UNCT Engagement Knowledge Network Resources, Site and act as a Knowledge
Management champion/advocate within the team and PPD. • Any other related tasks
as may be required or assigned by the supervisor. Results/expected outputs: As
an active UNEP team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly, and
high-quality support rendered to UNEP and its beneficiaries in the
accomplishment of her/his functions, including: • The UNEP UNCT Engagement
Knowledge Network SharePoint Space is regularly updated and maintained with
relevant content, documents, and events. • The Knowledge Network mailing list
& communications channels are maintained and discussions and Q&As are
duly supported and curated ensuring action items are followed up on. • Case
studies are documented and converted into clear, simple, and visually appealing
communications products. • UNEP Knowledge Products have a standard look and
feel and are graphically laid out in a visually appealing way. • UNEP/UN
content is reviewed, organized, and curated in the Knowledge SharePoint Space
and internal key messages/documents repositories as necessary. • Age, Gender,
and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated, and
documented in all activities throughout the assignment. • A final statement of
achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the
assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities
participated in, and capacities developed

Requirements
Required experience
3 years of experience in communications and/or knowledge
management is required. • Previous Working experience in environmental matters,
experience working in the UN or other international development or humanitarian
organizations, and other international experience(s) (i.e. studies, volunteer
work, internship) will be considered an asset • Excellent oral and written
skills; excellent writing, presentation, formulation, and reporting skills with
attention to detail. • Knowledge of graphic design software such as Adobe Suite
applications (Photoshop, Illustrator) and/or Canva is required. • Accuracy and
professionalism in document production, editing, and layout; • Excellent
interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work
inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots
community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at
different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for
development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a
challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of
international and national personnel; • Ability to engage with a wide range of
colleagues worldwide, build, sustain, and/or strengthen working relations,
trust, and mutual understanding • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum
supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Have affinity with or
interest in environment, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development,
and the UN System.

Master degree or equivalent in Social sciences,
communications, public relations, multimedia, journalism, data science, or
another related field. Bachelors degree with 4 years relevant experience can be
accepted in lieu of a Master’s degree.

Living conditions and remarks
The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast
of East Africa, neighbouring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and
the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and
47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into
sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and
Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an
annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power
parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1%
annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty
line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots
and tubers.” (FAO). Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic
goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and
banking services, and educational facilities are readily available. The city is
widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport,
and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country
destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to
the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN-HABITAT and UNEP.
The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV
would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at
the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the
assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
