Context:
This position is located in the French Translation Unit
within the Translation Service (TRS), which is part of the Governing Bodies
Secretariat. TRS is in charge of translating IOM’s official documents into
Spanish and French, either internally or externally, and provides outsourcing services
for other non-official languages.
Under the direct supervision of the Head, French Translation
Unit, the Translator (French) is accountable and responsible for providing translation
services covering a broad range of documents and subjects dealt with by the Organization.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
1.
Produce accurate and
complete versions in the target language using the most adequate terminology
and commonly accepted or established equivalents of professional, scientific or
technical concepts and terms.
2.
Maintain a certain speed
and volume output, due account being taken of the complexity of text assigned to
him/her.
3.
Meet deadlines established for
the production of documents.
4.
Self-revise certain translations.
5.
Edit texts in French to ensure
style and presentations are in conformity with IOM standards.
6.
Carry out linguistic and
terminology research and, as appropriate, preparing glossaries, technical vocabularies
and related reference tools.
7.
Attend meetings, as part of
the team and in representation of FTU, as requested.
8.
Perform such other related duties
as may be assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
• Master’s degree in Translation or a related field from an
accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional
experience, preferably in the United Nations common system or in a comparable international
organization; or,
• University degree in the above fields with seven years of
relevant professional experience, preferably in the United Nations common system
or in a comparable international organization.
Experience
• Experience of terminological and reference research techniques;
• Demonstrated experience in the use of standard computer-assisted
translation (CAT) tools and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.).
Skills
• Demonstrated solid drafting, writing, and analytical skills in French;
• Demonstrated ability to maintain high standards of accuracy, consistency,
and faithfulness to the spirit, style, and nuances of the original text;
• Good knowledge and understanding of a technical or administrative
field and of migration related terminology;
• Ability to keep abreast of the evolving linguistic specificities
of the French language and apply them accordingly.
Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.
For all applicants, perfect command of French (mother
tongue), excellent knowledge of English, and perfect understanding of Spanish
(passive) is required. Working knowledge of other UN languages is considered an
asset.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically
evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Competencies will be assessed during a competency-based interview.
Other:
Internationally recruited professional staff are required to
be mobile.
Any offer made to the candidate in relation to this vacancy notice

This selection process may be used to staff similar positions
in various duty stations. Recommended candidates endorsed by the Appointments and
Postings Board will remain eligible to be appointed in a similar position for a
period of 24 months.
The list of NMS countries above includes all IOM Member
States which are non-represented in the Professional Category of staff members.
Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically
fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and
security clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19
will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021.
This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
