Mission and objectives
UNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to save
children’s lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfill their
potential. UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child; in
everything we do. Together with our partners, we work to translate that
commitment into practical action, with special effort on reaching the most
vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children everywhere. In
all its work, UNICEF takes a life cycle-based approach, recognizing the
particular importance of early childhood development and adolescence. UNICEF
programmes focus on the most disadvantaged children, including those living in
fragile contexts, those with disabilities, those who are affected by
environmental degradation etc. Gender equality is at the core of UNICEF’s
accountability to children. UNICEF Strategic Plan, 2022–2025 | UNICEF Executive
Board, more explicitly, through its Gender Action Plan, 2022-2025 | UNICEF
(more details on the GAP in section #11 below) reaffirms gender equality and
adolescent girl empowerment as an organizational priority, and as integrated
across all five Goal Areas, as well as across the workplace, with clear
programme and institutional benchmarks, including for staffing.
Context
The proposed position is for a Gender and Knowledge
Management portfolio. This assignment will provide a core function to
supporting learning, knowledge sharing, communication and dissemination on
Gender in programming and within the workplace context. The scope of work for
the post covers 3 core areas: 1) Documentation and Communication; 2) Mapping,
Collating and sharing latest evidence on gender responsive/transformative
programming; and 3) Documentation of Gender staff capacity building. Jordan
Country Office’s (JCO) approach to gender equality programming is guided by the
global Gender Action Plan (2022-25), through a twin-tracked approach that
supports a) a life course approach by addressing gender equality across all
programming and b) targeted actions to advance the leadership and well-being of
adolescent girls, as girls are both disproportionately affected by gender
inequality and have tremendous potential to be leaders for change. JCO will
apply an intersectional approach to targeted actions. Across the humanitarian-development
nexus, UNICEF will continue to invest in rigorous gender analysis, data
collection and reporting, as well as evidence-based solutions that hold UNICEF
accountable to the children and women it serves. At the institutional level,
JCO will ensure adjustments in internal policies and systems to transform the
organization into a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable institution. Founded
on the third iteration of the GAP, JCO will strive to adopt a gender
transformative approach, at minimum gender responsive approaches. Aligned to
the GAP, JCO will also aspire to advocate with and leverage existing and new
partnerships to promote girls and women as agents of change, support their
civic participation and foster their equal leadership in enhancing their
well-being and that of their communities. The Gender UNV KM Officer, along with
the international Gender Programme Specialist, and under the guidance of the
Deputy Representative, will support the UNICEF programme sections (Education,
Child Protection, Health and Nutrition, WASH, Adolescents and Youth and Social
Policy/Social Protection) through strong knowledge management and
communications work (including documentation, capturing communication stories,
disseminating good practices etc.). S/he will also work closely with the Gender
Focal Point structure, including the National Gender Specialist, tasked to
institutionalize gender within sectoral programmes. National UN Specialist
