POST-DOCTORAL / SENIOR POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT (2 Positions, in Gaborone or Maun)

VACANCY NO.: DRD 1/2013
Duties: The Post-doctoral / Senior Post-doctoral Fellows will carry out programmes of research in any aspect of the research priority areas of the University listed below.
Research Areas:
(i)                 Culture, the arts and society: encompasses the analysis of cultural structures, discourses and phenomena, including particularly African languages, arts, media and epistemologies. It also includes the creation of new images, performances, artifacts and designs.
(ii)               Economic diversification and entrepreneurship: focuses on the study of the economy and the particular issues involved in the diversification of resource-based economies. It gives special attention to small and medium enterprises and to the role of entrepreneurship in business development.
(iii)             Environmental systems and natural resources management: studies environmental issues at the local, national, regional and global levels, emphasizing the inter-relationship of human and ecological concerns in achieving sustainable development, including the management of natural resources and ecosystems.
(iv)             Health:  research utilizes the biomedical, behavioral and social sciences to generate new knowledge about human health, study applications in clinical and community settings as well as sport, and develop strategies for the prevention, treatment and care of illness, particularly in developing countries.
(v)               Indigenous knowledge systems: are the specific historically-developed systems of knowledge and practice of a particular cultural group and region and this research theme considers their value for contemporary practices and innovation in areas such as human and animal health, agriculture and food production, natural resources management and conservation, and local economic development, as well as social policy.
(vi)             Minerals, water and energy: research includes scientific analysis of these key resources as well as engineering studies on the technologies for their sustainable utilization and studies of the policy and socio-economic dimensions of the choice, development and application of technologies.
(vii)           Social and political development: research addresses issues of social policy, such as poverty, education, social welfare, gender equity and the status of minorities, and the key dimensions of political development, including citizenship, security.
Requirements: Applicants should (i) be in possession of or have acquired a PhD by the start date; ii) have excellent potential for research and publication.
Remuneration: The University offers a competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications.

All fellows are appointed initially on a 1-year contract. Postdoctoral Fellows can be appointed for a maximum of two years, while Senior Fellows can be appointed for a maximum of three years.
