Org. Setting and Reporting
The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible
for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the United
Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. As a global leader in
security risk management principles, UNDSS enables the safe and effective
delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in the most complex and
challenging environments, while maximizing precious resources. To this end, the
work of the Department is aligned under a clear mission, to enable United
Nations system programme activities through trusted security leadership and
solutions.
This position is located in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for
Safety and Security, in the United Nations Department of Safety and Security
(UNDSS). The incumbent will report to the Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) for
Safety and Security.

Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for the following:
• Assist, advise, and facilitate the work of the Assistant Secretary-General
(ASG) in the day-to-day operations of their office. This includes participation
in the development, implementation and evaluation of strategy and projects in
the Department; keep abreast, monitoring and analyzing their development and
implementation; reviewing relevant correspondence, documents and reports;
• Identify problems and issues to be addressed and propose possible courses of
actions; liaise with relevant parties; identify and track follow-up actions;
proactively create linkages across the Department;
• Research, analyze, consolidate and present information gathered from other
departments and partners for reports and briefing notes;
• Prepare written outputs for the ASG in relation to their portfolio of
responsibilities, e.g., draft background papers and responses, input into
reports, and provide editorial and substantive guidance on correspondence
emanating from the Department in order to ensure contents as well as
substantive issues are in line with organizational policies, strategy, and
direction;
• Assist in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and
trends, preparation of studies, etc., including in relation to the work and
role of UNDSS and the UN security management system, and ensure that
information is disseminated to all stakeholders;
• Assist in strategy implementation, monitoring and reporting including the
Department's strategies on people and culture, gender and inclusivity,
Preventing Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), among others;
• Participate in management meetings and retreats; organize, prepare agendas
and summaries, as well as follow-up on decisions; lead planning of
international travel by the ASG;
• Ensure prompt and efficient communication and follow-up with other units
within the Department;
• Perform other duties as required.
Competencies

programme management and administration pertaining to the United Nations or
Inter-governmental processes. Ability to identify, analyze and participate in

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent)
in business administration, public administration, international relations,
management, economics or a related field. A first level university degree in
combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted
in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible
experience in project or programme management and administration in the context
of international or multilateral operations is required.
International experience working in the front office of a senior official in
the United Nations or similar International Organization, providing direct
substantive and administrative support and facilitation in the implementation
of high-level strategy and programmes of work is required.
Two years of experience at the international level providing direct technical,
policy and operational advice to senior officials on security or crisis
management is required.
Experience of the political and budgetary decision-making processes of the
United Nations or similar international organizations is desirable.
Experience in analysing and interpreting data in support of decision making is
desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United
Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English (oral and
written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment
exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
