Mission and objectives
UNICEF in Turkey works to protect the rights of children and
adolescents in Turkey since 1951. UNICEF's programme in Turkey focuses on the
needs of the most vulnerable children in the areas of education, child
protection, health care, social policy, adolescents and youth, in line with the
UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Context
This UNV assignment is part of UNICEF Turkiye’s flagship
adolescent development and participation programme. UNICEF works in 190
countries and territories to protect the rights of every child. UNICEF has
spent 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their families.
Defending children's rights throughout their lives requires a global presence,
aiming to produce results and understand their effects. UNICEF believes all
children have a right to survive, thrive and fulfil their potential to the
benefit of a better world. In Turkiye, there are approximately 5 million
adolescents aged 14-17 years out of a total population of 84.6 million. UNICEF
Turkey’s Adolescent Development and Participation (ADAP) programme supports the
government’s efforts to ensure adolescents are learning and equipped with
relevant life skills that will ensure they are empowered to contribute actively
and positively to their society's economic and social life. Climate action:
Türkiye organized a National Climate Council in 2022 which resulted in key
actions by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change towards
its global climate commitments. As the first step, a separate Presidency on
Climate Change was established to design and implement the national programmes
and policies. Parallel to the national road map, a youth platform was initiated
by the Minister - Youth Climate Envoys, with a representative from each
university’s Climate Change Club. In 2022, the youth climate envoys
participated in key national and international policy-level discussions and
four youth climate envoys represented Türkiye in COP27 with the technical and
financial support of UNICEF-The first-time youth were part of government
delegation to COP28. The Climate Change Presidency and UNICEF Türkiye Office
are together collaborating to develop a road map for COP28 in consultation with
young people to make sure the strongest presence of them in all steps and
result document of the event. Youth participation: n communities all over
Turkiye, youth are already mobilising, creating change through innovations and
demanding action from all of society. The Local Council’s of Youth (LCOY’s) are
expected to galvanise youth action and through them offer opportunities to
sustain and scale up youth action with stakeholders including municipalities,
private sector and public institutions. UNICEF offers reasonable accommodation

Task description
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of
the ADAP Programme Officer, the UNV ADAP Assistant will: • Contribute to the
design and implementation of environment and climate change-related ADAP
programs. • Contribute to the design and implementation of the COP 28 youth
engagement strategy, preparations with MOEUCC, DKM and youth climate envoys and
follow up the post COP28 steps (national and international). • Contribute to
the coordination of ADAP youth climate focused platforms including Climate
Activists (DKM), MOFSS Regional Climate platform and Youth Climate Envoys •
Support to administrative and financial follow-up for CSO partners working on
climate change and environment • Provide support to Youth foresight initiative
• Support to administrative and financial follow-up for Climate Change CSO
partners and youth networks • Compiling data from adolescent and youth climate
action engagement programs, environmentally relevant data, international
platforms, governmental and CSO partners. • Any other related tasks as may be
required or assigned by the supervisor. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are
encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their
assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in
the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of
their working time to some of the following suggested activities: • Strengthen
their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading
relevant UNV and external publications and taking active part in UNV activities
(for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted
with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host
country; • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer
actions, results and opportunities. • Contribute articles/write-ups on field
experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press
releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN
Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering
or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online
Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Requirements
Required experience
3 years of experience in the national level in youth
engagement and empowerment. -A Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences including
environmental issues, sociology, anthropology, psychology, education,
communication, international relations, public relations, public or other
related social science field is required. - Experience working in the UN or
other international development organization is an asset. -Excellent oral and
written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, and reporting skills; -
Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing. - Excellent
interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively
and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community
members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different
levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for
development. - Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a
challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of
international and national personnel. - Solid overall computer literacy,
including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and
email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology
equipment. -Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability
to work with tight deadlines.

Living conditions and remarks
Türkiye is an essentially safe and easy place to live.
Furnished and unfurnished apartments can be easily rented close to the office
at reasonable prices. Supermarkets and grocery stores have all the essentials
including a large choice of fruits and vegetables. In terms of social life,
there are plenty of restaurants and bars, and a few sports possibilities.
Health care is available and adequate.
