The Latin America Communications Manager will be responsible
for creating and implementing an overall communications strategy in support of
Planned Parenthood Global’s Latin America office and programs that advance
sexual and reproductive rights in-country, regionally and
internationally. S/he will develop opportunities to showcase
Planned Parenthood Global’s work in Latin America with sister agencies, donors,
the media, influencers, and others in the sexual and reproductive health and
rights field. S/he will build support for reproductive rights,
particularly for safe and legal abortion, through content development,
campaigns, and innovative use of technology and social media to engage new
audiences. S/he will also look for opportunities to improve and streamline
internal communications to maximize programmatic effectiveness. S/he will
report to the LARO Regional Director.
Duties & Responsibilities
Lead the development and execution of a strategic
communications plan in support of Planned Parenthood Global in Latin
America. This includes defining audiences, objectives, platforms, budget,
and measures in four key areas:
Marketing and positioning of Planned Parenthood
Global/LARO, the Latin American programs and partners
- Draft
and disseminate materials that build a broader understanding of Planned
Parenthood Global’s work in service delivery and advocacy, innovation,
program effectiveness, and partnerships in Latin America, ensuring a focus
on Planned Parenthood Global's unique contributions to the field (examples
include program briefs, country reports, factsheets, website and social
media content, news articles, academic articles on relevant sexual and
reproductive health issues, and press releases, etc.). Target
audiences include donors, sister NGOs, PPFA and affiliates, etc.
- Generate
new ideas/opportunities to increase visibility within sexual and
reproductive health and related fields. Working closely with the
MPLS, draft abstracts, articles, and presentations for publication and
presentation at professional conferences and meetings in order to elevate
Planned Parenthood Global programs and shared learning.
- Cultivate
media relationships with journalists who cover reproductive rights and
other social issues, to generate coverage of the issues and raise
visibility of Planned Parenthood Global experts, partners, and programs in
Latin America.
- Draft
op-eds, presentations and other communications materials to position
Planned Parenthood Global experts and partners to comment on issues
related to sexual and reproductive health and rights in Latin America.
- Write,
edit, and pitch media materials, including press releases, statements,
op-eds, letters to the editor and newsletters. Coordinate review of
materials across teams and divisions, including liaising with PPFA’s
editorial team in New York.
- Produce
updated content for website, blog, and social media
- Collaborate
with Planned Parenthood Global’s communications team in New York to create
a comprehensive media strategy for Latin America and to include Latin
American content in Global media outreach.
Communications support of advocacy and social norms
programming to advance sexual and reproductive rights in Latin America
- Develop
cross-partner/regional communications campaigns and collateral
material, including talking points, news releases, op-eds,
letters to the editor, blog posts, backgrounders, and web content.
Draft or supervise the drafting of collateral materials.
- Create
and manage communications/media plans for LARO-driven events, including
message definition and communications guidance for allies and
partners. Ensure consistent branding and resonant messaging.
- Identify
and act upon opportunities for Planned Parenthood Global to lend its voice
and expertise to advance SRHR.
- Seek
out and highlight stories from the field, particularly to combat abortion
stigma. Cultivate relationships with cultural influencers (art, music,
literature, film, sports, television, etc) who can advocate for sexual and
reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Latin America.
- Seek
opportunities for socio-cultural change in support of SRHR through
innovative collaborations, initiatives, and events (concerts, soap operas,
radio shows, documentaries, prizes, etc)
- Coordinate
with LARO Program Officers, particularly those who focus on
communications, advocacy, and changing social norms.
Internal communications
- Make
suggestions for streamlining internal communications processes.
- Provide
regular updates and reports for LARO and HQ staff on LARO communications
and other activities.
- Liaise
with Global communications team in HQ.
- Develop
messaging, training, and guidance for LARO staff as needed.
- Manage
digital library of communications materials, ensuring materials are
updated and accessible for LARO staff.
General communications support
- Hire
and supervise work of consultants and interns, as needed.
- Pursue
linkages to outreach with Latino audiences in the US, in coordination with
Global HQ and PPFA.
- Create
Latin America-specific digital communications outlets for LARO.
- Maintain
a communication lens on overall LARO work, and work closely with LARO
management team to build out communications work.
- Attend
country meetings to stay updated on programs and seize opportunities.
- Translate,
edit, and review English and Spanish language documents, as necessary.
Education
Master's degree in related field.
Qualifications
- 5-7
years of experience in planning and executing communications strategies
- 3-5
years professional experience with media, campaigns, marketing, public
relations, or a related field
- Wide-ranging
contacts and deep understanding of media landscape in Latin America
- 2-3
years experience with sexual and reproductive health or a related human
rights/social justice issue in Latin America
- Experience
working on issue-based advocacy campaigns, including application of
innovative messaging in traditional, digital, and social media
- Experience
working across issue areas, teams and divisions at a large organization
- Pro-active,
self-starter, strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent
research, writing and editing skills; ability to produce clear, concise
materials on tight deadlines. Proven ability to adapt language and
messaging to various audiences
- Ability
and willingness to travel internationally and domestically (approximately
10%)
- Knowledge
of diverse groups, working with a multicultural workforce, and sensitivity
and appreciation to cultural differences
- Bilingual
in Spanish is required along with oral and written communications skills
in English and Spanish.
