About Amnesty International
Our aim is simple: an end to human rights abuses.
Independent, international and influential, we campaign for justice, freedom
and truth wherever they're denied. And whether we're applying pressure through powerful
research or direct lobbying, mass demonstrations or online campaigning, we're
all inspired by hope for a better world. One where human rights are respected
and protected by everyone, everywhere.
Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7
million people who campaign for a world where human rights are enjoyed by
all. Our supporters are outraged by human rights abuses but inspired by
hope for a better world - so we work to improve human rights through
campaigning and international solidarity. We reach almost every country in
the world and have:
- more
than 2 million members and supporters who drive forward our fight for
rights
- more
than 5 million activists who strengthen our calls for justice
Amnesty International has embarked on a major change process
to transform the way we address our internal and external challenges, and to
strengthen our global movement ensuring an enhanced human rights impact. In
this context, we are shifting our centralized International Secretariat (IS) by
setting up offices in key strategic global locations.
In the Americas, we already have a Regional office (based in
Mexico) and now are excited to be expanding our presence by opening a
sub-regional office in Lima. In the coming years, we will transform not
just our structures and ways to function and operate, but we will also harness
the remarkable people-power of our IS staff, our sections and members. In
order to do this we need to recruit an exceptional Human Rights expert to
recruit and manage our Peru office of approximately 20 staff.
The Role
This crucial role, Deputy Regional Director, will lead and
drive many different areas for Amnesty International in the region.
Ensuring the office is run smoothly and within best practice, that excellent
researchers and campaigners are recruited, nurtured and given strategic
direction, and that the office develops and maintains effective
relationships. Whether we are addressing restrictions on
freedom of expression, violations of the rights of migrants or denouncing
sexual violence against women, our research and campaigning efforts make a
difference. Our Peru office staff will look to you for innovative strategies
for action and solid guidance, both of which will stem from your strong
communication across the organization and effective links with Amnesty
International’s research teams, activists and the media to build public
engagement.
Reporting to the Regional Director based in Mexico, the
Deputy Regional Director will co-ordinate the development of new research and
campaign tactics and techniques, capitalising on country/regional and thematic
specialists, and identifying opportunities for partnership and collaboration
with other social and human rights movements and communities. At the same time,
you will work closely with the Regional Director to set up and manage the sub
regional office, control budgets and motivate and inspire our regional staff. You’ll
be integral to the management of the International Secretariat, deputising for
the Regional Director whenever necessary.
About You
Overseeing the planning and delivery of all the sub-regional
office’s strategies for action calls for extensive experience leading effective
research and campaigns at a national and international level. You’ll be
well-versed in the human rights context within the region – from identifying
issues to undertaking impact assessment – all using sound political judgement.
You’ll have extensive experience in a key leadership role and have knowledge of
global human rights issues and trends. The proven ability to get the best out
of people is vital too, whether that is through coaching, mentoring, capacity
building or training.
You’ll certainly know how to adjust priorities, hit
deadlines and adapt to fast-changing political situations. You’ll have
excellent external advocacy and communication skills being fluent in both
English and Spanish. Above all, you have the collaborative and creative
approach needed get results and the personal energy and drive to make an
impact.
