Assistant Professor at Centre for BioRobotics: Department of Biology

The Centre for BioRobotics at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) was established in late 2013 as a joint venture between the Maersk Institute, at the Faculty of Engineering, and the Department of Biology, at the Faculty of Science. The centre was founded to strengthen the existing collaboration between strong research groups in bioacoustics at the Department of Biology and bioinspired and biomimetic robotics at the Maersk Institute.

The scientific goal of the Centre for BioRobotics is to tackle questions arising from the acoustic behaviours of animals which cannot be addressed completely by biology or technology alone while also exploring applications of insights from biology in the robotics and technological domain and vice versa.  Practically, the intention is to strengthen existing synergy and use it to create new opportunities for seeking external funding.

Work at the centre currently focusses on the hearing system of lizards, the coordination of calling behaviour among large groups of frogs, and the echolocating behaviours of bats. Work associated with the centre includes research and development on the neural control of insect locomotion using legged robotic platforms.

The Centre for BioRobotics now seeks to recruit new faculty members. The posts are intended for candidates at assistant professor level.  The expected start date for successful applicants is September 2014.

This position, based at the Department of Biology, will be filled by a candidate with biological background and familiarity with technical, mathematical or computational methodologies.  The position is matched by a complementary position at the Maersk Institute, advertised separately.

The preferred candidate will have a good doctorate and post-doctoral experience in one or more of the fields of neurobiology and behaviour, computational neurobiology, bioacoustics and biophysics. Demonstrated innovation and creativity in using computational and technological developments to address biological research questions is a definite advantage.

Applicants for the position should submit up to three relevant research publications, and a statement of one to two pages on the research question(s) and approach(es) they would like to investigate within the Centre for BioRobotics. Submitting more than three papers for consideration will not be advantageous.

In the case of joint-authored publications, candidates should also submit a brief statement, endorsed by the other authors of the paper, detailing for which components of the reported work they claim credit.

In addition, applicants must submit standard SDU required documents, e.g. CV, evidence of teaching ability, certification of degrees etc. - please see below.

For further information on the Centre for BioRobotics or the advertised position, please contact John Hallamjohn@mmmi.sdu.dk, Annemarie Surlykke ams@biology.sdu.dk or Jakob Christensen-Dalsgaardjcd@biology.sdu.dk.

The application must include the following:
• Application
• A detailed Curriculum Vitae
• Certificates/Diplomas (Master's degree certificate and the latest certificate)
• Information on any previous teaching experience, please attach as teaching portfolio
• List of publications indicating the publications attached
• Examples of the most relevant publications. Please attach one pdf-file for each publication, a possible co-author statement must be a part of this pdf-file
• Research statement - please see above.

The University encourages all interested persons to apply, regardless of age, gender, religious affiliation, or ethnic background.

Applications must be submitted electronically using the link below. Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format. Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb. Please read How to apply before you apply.
