SENIOR LECTURER/ LECTURER

The Department of Chinese Studies in the Faculty of
Humanities at the University of Botswana aims to produce Graduates who are both
competent in the Chinese language and familiar with Chinese society and
civilisation. The Department is currently seeking to recruit a Senior Lecturer
or a Lecturer.
Duties: Senior Lecturer: The successful
candidate will be expected to: (i) provide academic leadership and mentorship
to staff within the Department of Chinese Studies in line with the vision of
the University of Botswana as outlined in relevant policy documents; (ii)
provide leadership and coordination in the fields of teaching, research and
service for the Department; (iii) teach Mandarin Chinese at all
levels and courses on Chinese society and culture (taught in English) in the
Department of Chinese Studies; (iv) carry out any other duties and
responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of Department.
Lecturer: The successful candidate will be expected
to: (i) to teach Mandarin Chinese at all levels and courses on Chinese society
and culture (taught in English) for the BA single major programme in the
Department of Chinese Studies; (ii) participate in all academic and
professional activities including research and supervision of research
projects; (iii) carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be
assigned by the Head of Department.
Requirements: Senior Lecturer: Candidates
should have: (i) at least a Masters’ Degree in Chinese Studies or relevant
field; (ii) a Bachelors’ Degree in Chinese Studies or relevant field with at
least a second class, first division (2.1) pass/ GPA of at least 3.6; (iii) at
least 3 years of teaching experience at a University or
comparable institution; (iv) have a good and sustained record of research and
publications with at least 6 publications, 4 of
which should be refereed journal articles, lead and/or single author in at
least 2 refereed journal articles or book chapters; (v) applicants
should demonstrate evidence of service; (vi) fluency in spoken and written
Mandarin Chinese; (vii) fluency in spoken and written English. The following
will be added advantages: (i) a relevant PhD; (ii) demonstration of
effective academic leadership; (iii) multi-disciplinary experience in teaching,
research, administration or consultancy work; (iv) a record of attracting
external funding. The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list
of publications; clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published,
name(s) of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any. Publications should be
categorized into: books, monographs, refereed and non-refereed journals,
chapters in books, etc.
Lecturer: Candidates should have: (i) at least a
Masters’ Degree in Chinese Studies or a relevant field; (ii) a Bachelors’
Degree in Chinese Studies or related fields with at least a second class, first
division (2.1) pass/ GPA of at least 3.6; (iii) show evidence of engagement in research
and service; (iv) native or near native fluency in spoken and
written Mandarin Chinese; (iv) fluency in spoken and written English. A
relevant PhD, teaching
experience at a University or comparable institution and demonstration of
effective academic leadership will be added advantages.
