ORBIS Africa: Programme Development Manager

The Programme Development Manager works with the Director of Programme Development, ORBIS Africa, to develop and expand the programme portfolio within Africa. S/he also manages implementation of certain programmes in Africa. S/he will be based in Cape Town, South Africa, and she/he travels to assigned programme countries in Africa and occasionally to other ORBIS office locations.

Reporting and Working Relationships

The Programme Development Manager reports to the Director of Programme Development, ORBIS Africa. S/he collaborates with the programme team in Africa

Essential Job Functions:
  • Contribute to ORBIS’ programmatic work in a manner that is consistent with ORBIS’ global strategic approach and organisational mission;
  • Collaborate with the Director of Programme Development - ORBIS Africa in the development of programmes and annual plans in the assigned sub-regions;
  • Lead the development of certain programmes in certain countries.Develop new concept papers, project plans and project budgets related to new and expanded programme development;
  • Support the Director of Programme Development and Fundraising Director in certain statutory funding proposals;
  • Support  the programme team in the preparation for review meetings both regionally and globally;Manage assigned projects and relationships in key countries;
  • Carry out specific, strategic projects within the EMEA region;
  • Attend key regional and global ORBIS programme meeting;
  • Ensure all reporting (qualitative and quantitative) are prepared.

Persona Specification:

  • Strategic and creative thinker;
  • Demonstrated understanding, experience and success in all aspects of programme development and implementation;
  • Knowledge and understanding of eye health as a public health issue;
  • Evidence of ability to motivate individuals;
  • Post-Graduate Degree in eye care, social sciences, humanities or development studies;
  • Minimum 10 years international experience in multi-cultural settings;
  • Strong organisational skills;
  • Ability to prioritise;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written;
  • Flexible, pro-active and open-minded work style: the ability to work productively both independently and in a team-based environment;
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Ability to travel locally and internationally.
