Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the
United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues
at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development
of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under
review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the
international community for action.
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora
(CITES) is an international agreement between states. Its aim is to ensure that
international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten
their survival. The CITES Secretariat is administered by UNEP and is located at
the Geneva duty station.
Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Outreach and Projects Unit, the
incumbent will perform the following functions:
Responsibilities
•Ensures implementation of the CITES communications strategy
to publicize priority issues and/or major events relevant to the Convention, to
include drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and
reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the
outcome.
•Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies
issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action / responses.
•In line with the CITES communications strategy, undertakes activities to
promote media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews, press seminars and
other special activities) of priority issues and/or major events relevant to
the Convention, initiating pro-active media outreach efforts, proposing and
arranging press conferences/media coverage, disseminating materials and
consulting with press on approach/story angle and other information requests,
undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the
impact of coverage.
•Produces or oversees production of a specific type or types (e.g. print,
broadcast) of information communications products (e.g. press kits, press
releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders,
audio-visual materials, radio spot program,), to include proposing topics, undertaking
research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing
production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts,
editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and
distribution.
•Plans and organizes, in consultation with the relevant partners within and
outside the CITES Secretariat, strategic campaign activities for the World
Wildlife Day, including in-person and virtual high-level meetings, associated
events, partner coordination of the event and the dedicated media outreach, and
the management of the microsite.
•Prepares, on the basis of official CITES documentation and other sources,
initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in relevant newsletters,
periodicals, reports and books.
•Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies.
•Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on
developments, responding to inquiries.
•Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies.
•Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff and undertakes
other duties as assigned.
•Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights
through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to
enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

PLANNING & ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed

adjusts plans and actions as necessary, uses time efficiently.
Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or
equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public
administration or related field is required.
A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years
of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university
degree.
Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics,
business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible
experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public
administration or related area is required.
Experience in delivering a variety of written communications products in a
clear, concise style is required.
Experience in supporting inter-governmental processes, including servicing
intergovernmental discussions and high-level events is desirable.
Experience working in an international media environment is desirable.
Experience working with the United Nations or an international organization is
desirable.
Experience identifying and managing communication media partnerships is
desirable.
Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is
desirable
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United
Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is
required. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is desirable. Knowledge of another
official United Nations language is desirable.
NOTE: ''Fluency'' equals a rating of ''fluent'' in all four areas (read, write,
speak, understand) and ''Knowledge of'' equals a rating of ''confident'' in two
of the four areas.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment
exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
Appointment against this position is for an initial period
of one year and may be subject to extension.
